Nooses - 15# & 20# test mono:
- 15# is a good for trapping small raptors like kestrels, sharpies, and merlins.
- 20# is a good all purpose strength and stiffness for trapping medium to large hawks.
Baits - anything from mice to starlings
- My favorite baits are two starlings or one starling & one mouse or gerbil - red-tailed's can't resist these combinations.... Single bait of either species works too. My experience also indicate that gerbils seem to attract red-tailed's better than mice - could be that they are more active at lower temps than mice. When the temps drop below freezing, mice tend to just curl up and don't move much.
